This piece has really inspired me to think differently about my project. I'm now thinking how I can control what happens in a space more - instead of letting the space decide for me. I love the unpredictable rhythms and the decision making involved in putting this video together.

I think this concept is a good leap forward for my project. I'm now thinking about space in a new and unpredictable way.

''Travel Along''

This is a wooden construction with monofilament and led light. 

Apart from it being really beautiful - I really like it because I think it discusses the same issues of light and space as I do.

Light Travelling Through The Appartment

So it's common knowledge that if you take a picture artificial light with long shutter speed you can make shapes with said light.

That's what I did while snapping photos of my phone's lit up screen.

So the light begins in the corner of my living room and makes it's way through the apartment down the stairs and out the door. The layout of the building dictates how you negotiate through it. 

Trees 2.0!

I went home to my native Roscommon and made another stop motion that by far has progressed since the last one.

First of all this location has a lot more going on. Secondly I am also manually negotiating my way through the space - along with the line. The space to a degree still is dictating the limits of how I can move but there is still an amount of my own decision making involved. I am teetering on the concept of letting space dictate/not dictate your actions.

Trees!

I made a stop motion, again with my trusty reflective tape, of line hopping long trees at college.

Two questions can be raised from this? Was I interested in form like before? Or how line can physically move through a space?

I would think more emphasis is on the later. By keeping to just the trees I am letting the space dictate the limits of how and where the line can move to.

A Previous Idea Revisited

Earlier on in my project I had made a stop-motion of a reflective line travelling along the walls of my room. But I didn't go further than that. There's something to this idea and I revisited again. Here's what I came up with:

Same principle as the last one but taken to a different space and more forms and shapes are being considered. 

I edited this video further to look something like this:

I prefer this second one. The colour in the first one was a little distracting. This barer one is straight to the point with no distractions.

I love the massive environmental work by this couple. I love how the umbrellas, peppered along the landscape, define the land. It makes you view the area in a new way

Where to go next?

I'm not sure where to go with my project next. I'm having a bit of a mental block.

In the mean time I've been experimenting outside with no specific purpose - just to see if anything inspires me.

 I wrote 'path' on a path, geddit?

 'Puddle' on a puddle.

 

Defining My Room

This is a 'panoramic' view of my desk with all my belongings. Taking strips of paper I started defining all the objects in equal vertical lines. Before I had digitally included line. By manually contouring the area I was able to understand the different forms much better. 

I used the same technique with wool, for the clothes in my wardrobe.
