Martin Tuma

“The glowing green grid can be seen as an icon of computer imaging technology, which in this ‘real life,’ incarnation, gently melds with the flowing shape of a lovely landscape… a dream-like vision of symbiotic unity.” – Stuart Williams, artist.

Stop Motion

In this short clip I added more and more makeup (bronzing powder) to my face (under cheekbones, sides of the nose, lines around the mouth, collar bones). Creating a new level of depth to my face.

Physical Contour Lines

Contour Lines

''Unknown Pleasures'', Joy Division (mid-seventies, British rock band) album artwork.

Is it mountains? a heart monitor? shredded fabric? It reminds me of contour lines you can find on an aerial map.

In this map, areas that are steep, are indicated by close lines. Flatter land is shown through lines spread further apart.

It's a really effective way of portraying something 3D on a 2D surface.

Contouring A Form

I imagined there was light being filtered through a space and how a form would look. By just drawing the light it acts as a contour and you can tell what each shape is

For this last one I stuck strips of masking tape horizontally across my face. Following the lines it contoured my face pretty well (I look like an Egyptian mummy!).

Experimenting With Light

  Light can exaggerate form.

I shined light at different angles on a doll's face and drew only the lighted parts.  I found out that each angle was completely different to the next. It proved that light can change how you percieve the same thing in many different ways.

Deciding Direction With 'Space' Project

I had been looking at camouflage and blending in with space.

Sound asleep in my apartment one night, I woke up suddenly. I presumed I was at my house back home. I looked around the room and noticed light from the street lamp outside. Through a gap at the bottom of the blind light filtered through and followed the perimeter of the room and I immediately knew where I was.

Light can give you information about a space.

''Hiding In The City''

Liu Bolin, aka 'The Invisible Man', travels the world painting himself to blend in with his surroundings. "Some people call me the invisible man, but for me it's what is not seen in a picture which is really what tells the story,", Chinese authorities closed down his art studio, located in Beijing, where the artist worked until 2005, he was still highly motivated to carry making art. "I am standing, but there is a silent protest, the protest against the environment for the survival, the protest against the state. I wanted to photograph the reality of scenes of China's development today,''.

My approach to the project, ''To Sense My Space'', at the beginning was to.... doodle. So that's what I did. The result was this:

A girl with a missing piece.
Negative space. I became intrigued as to how this character became this way. So I wrote a rough short story about her. She goes on a journey to find her missing piece. I developed characters and so on.
Diving into creating a story right off the bat eliminates the possibility to experiment and play. So I moved away from this. I may stray back to it further down the line, who knows.

I played around with the idea that you can capture light within a space. I glued leaves to a cardboard frame and held them to the sunlight. I really like the impression of my hand in the first photo.

After listening to the artist Mark Bradford in this video I was inspired to create my own piece where language and expressionist style painting came together.

I tried to capture the idea of camouflage & blending in with a space.

Mark Bradford describes himself as being somewhat detached for his work. With this piece the opposite can  definitely be said for me. I've literally plunged myself into the art.
