Is it mountains? a heart monitor? shredded fabric? It reminds me of contour lines you can find on an aerial map. In this map, areas that are steep, are indicated by close lines. Flatter land is shown through lines spread further apart.
It's a really effective way of portraying something 3D on a 2D surface.
